The Singularity\nhas risen to fame largely because of two core thinkers. Vernor Vinge and Ray\nKurzweil. Vernor Vinge is a sci-fi writer prolific in the \u201890s and Ray Kurzweil\nworks for Google and involved in things such as optical character recognition,\ntext-to-speech synthesis, the list goes on and on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

So, What Is the Singularity? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In a nutshell,\nthe singularity marks a moment when technology trumps the human brain, and the limitations\nof the mind are surpassed by artificial intelligence. The idea would be that\nthe human mind and the internet would be \u201cconnected,\u201d so that you would have\nquick access to any knowledge in the cloud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the past,\nlearning a new skill or a new language took time. You had to take a course and\npractice the language over and over again. Imagine if a language could be\ninstalled into your brain where even the proper accents are achieved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\npossibilities are endless!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is the Singularity Possible?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Yeah right,\nthis is some future dystopian of the 3000s or beyond. Or some alien nation on\nthe sci-fi channel\u2026 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ray predicts\nthis to be possible by 2035 and we are well on our way to achieving this goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If this idea\nscares you, you are not alone. Both Steven Hawkins and Elon Musk have already\nexpressed their concerns that super AI could turn against the human race and\nwipe it clean. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elon Musk and Mars<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Musk has set up\na space program to colonize on Mars reportedly to escape the chaotic clutches\nof super AI here on earth. Kurzweil suggests people are overreacting and that\nif kept on a tight leash, AI could expose us to many of the wonders of the\nworld. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are already\nreports that AI systems can diagnose a problem 1000x faster than a typical doctor\nbound by the limitations of the human brain could.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t forget: The\ncomputer \u201cDeep Blue\u201d managed to beat Gary Kasparov in chess in 1997.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Humans Merge with Tech<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the next few\ndecades, we can expect this to mesh with many things in our society that were\nreserved for human beings. Some will struggle against the AI, and it\u2019s an\ninteresting predicament. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those that refuse\nto upgrade to the super-human package may find themselves less marketable in\nthe global economy. Imagine a neurosurgeon of today, jobless in 2035 for simply\nrefusing to upgrade and therefore not stay competitive. Others may realize that the only\nway to success lies in collaboration with the computers.
