In it, a chain of stores included this curious qualifier in the small print *Not available in all stores.<\/p>\n<p>If <strong><em>all <\/em><\/strong>stores don\u2019t have the item, why is the chain advertising it?<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, the message that the chain is trying to send is that SOME stores don\u2019t have the item. The intended message, that the item is available here and there, but not everywhere, would be completely clear if the small print would simply say *Not available in SOME stores.<\/p>\n<p>And that brings up another question: Do I really want to travel to a store in the chain, only to find that the store doesn\u2019t have the item that I want? That experience would not make me happy, and such rudeness might discourage me from shopping at any of the chain\u2019s stores again. Overall, this is a poorly worded ad. The company should make sure that the item is available in all stores, or else focus on some other piece of merchandise that is everywhere. <!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1094\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1094\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sharpinnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/lemons.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1094 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sharpinnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/lemons-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"a bunch of lemons\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" data-size=\"960x640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sharpinnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/lemons-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sharpinnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/lemons-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sharpinnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/lemons-120x80.jpg 120w, https:\/\/www.sharpinnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/lemons-880x587.jpg 880w, https:\/\/www.sharpinnovations.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/lemons.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/> <\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1094\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Did the wife want 6 lemons or 6 quarts of milk?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Then there was the case of the wife who sent her husband to the store with these written instructions. \u201cGet a quart of milk, and if they have lemons, get 6.\u201d The store did, indeed, have lemons, and the husband dutifully came home with 6 quarts of milk, just as his wife had unwittingly instructed him to do.<\/p>\n<p>Good writing is always clear and easy to understand, and if you\u2019ll read your works with a critical eye before you send them, you can make sure that your writing is always clear\u2026and polite.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a writing flaw that often forces the reader to go over a sentence several times them to figure out exactly what the writer means. The name of this common error is \u201cToo many nouns between the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/antecedent\">antecedent<\/a> and the pronoun\u201d. Here\u2019s an example:<\/p>\n<p>Buford saw Longstreet&#8217;s division coming toward his men. Reynolds&#8217; troops responded quickly to the calls for assistance. Pickett started charging, and soon\u00a0<strong>he<\/strong>\u00a0found himself in the midst of a deadly battle.<\/p>\n<p>(Who is\u00a0<strong>he<\/strong>? The reader will probably think that <strong>he<\/strong> is Pickett, because Pickett is the closest noun to <strong>he<\/strong>, but <strong>he<\/strong> is actually Longstreet.<\/p>\n<p>The sentence is clear this way: Buford saw Longstreet&#8217;s division coming toward his men. Reynolds&#8217; troops responded quickly to the calls for assistance. Pickett started charging, and soon Buford found himself in the midst of a deadly battle.<\/p>\n<p>For a business owner, it\u2019s valuable to think of the importance of clear writing this way: A potential customer has agreed to give you a minute of her time to read your marketing materials. Do you want her to spend that minute reading everything that you\u2019ve written, or do you want her to read your first sentence 13 times trying to figure out what, exactly, you\u2019re trying to say?<\/p>\n<p>Clarity is crucial, and tone is also important. If you\u2019ve ever received an impolite letter or email, you know that you\u2019d have a much warmer opinion of the sender if you\u2019d receive a polite correspondence. \u00a0Consider the difference in your reaction if you\u2019d receive these 2 emails.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong>For your problem, deal with Jane Quigley in Accounts Receivable.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>This is cold and gruff, which isn\u2019t a good way to deal with a customer, even a problem customer. This is better:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong>Dear Barbara,<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong>For this billing issue, please talk to Jane Quigley in Accounts Receivable. Her extension is 103, and she\u2019ll be happy to help you.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong>Thank you for your consideration.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong>Jim Bagley<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong>Accounting Supervisor<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>This email is also short. It is, however, polite and friendly, and writing it hardly took more time than writing the gruff email.<\/p>\n<p>Please and Thank you are words that we can never use too often, whether we\u2019re writing or speaking.
